Inspection Tool Calibration Best Practices

2/14/2023

Picture
Inspection tool calibration is an important process that ensures the accuracy and reliability of measurement results. Proper calibration ensures that the inspection tool is performing within its specified tolerance limits, and that the measurements taken are accurate and repeatable. In this article, we will discuss some best practices for calibration of inspection tools.
  1. Understand the Inspection Tool: Before calibrating an inspection tool, it is important to understand its design and operating principles. This knowledge will help you identify potential issues, as well as help determine the appropriate calibration procedure.
  2. Use Standards: Standards are essential for the calibration of inspection tools. They provide a known reference and allow you to determine the accuracy and precision of your measurements. It is important to use standards that are traceable to national or international standards.
  3. Regular Calibration: Inspection tools should be calibrated at regular intervals to ensure that they are operating within their specified tolerance limits. The frequency of calibration depends on the type of tool, the environment in which it is used, and the level of accuracy required.
  4. Document Calibration Results: It is important to document the calibration results, including the date, the person performing the calibration, the standard(s) used, and the results.
  5. Consider Environmental Factors: Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and vibration can affect the performance of inspection tools. It is important to consider these factors when calibrating or using the tools, and to correct for any potential errors caused by environmental factors.
  6. Train the Users: Regular training of the user of the tool is important to ensure that they are using the tool correctly, and that they understand how to interpret and use the measurement results.Use
  7. Quality Control Procedures: Quality control procedures such as statistical process control (SPC) can be used to monitor the performance of inspection tools over time and to identify any trends or patterns that may indicate the need for repair or replacement.

Proper calibration of inspection tools is essential for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of measurement results. By following these best practices, you can ensure that your inspection tools are operating within their specified tolerance limits and that the measurements taken are accurate and repeatable.

Procedures Management & The Audit Process

12/2/2019

Procedure management is extremely important in any business. Procedures help direct employees on the how and why of task completion.  In addition, they can provide evidence that an organization is compliant with legal regulations and contractual requirements. For this reason, having a proper procedure management system is a must for all businesses.

When it comes to procedures, there are a few things that auditors will look for first. For example, auditors will verify that a procedure was put through the proper approval process. Also, auditors will look to see if a system is in place to objectively review the procedure. In order for businesses to answer these questions, proper documentation must be gathered.

One of the most difficult things about procedure management is keeping track of documentation. Since there are many ways that employees correspond with one another, there are many documents that may surface in the process of developing and maintaining a procedure.

For example, while email correspondence may be available for one procedure, physical or paper documents may be available for another. Because of this, many companies choose to rely on QMS software to keep track of all the documents related to the procedure management process. The use of an integrated document management system streamlines the corresponding auditing process.

Web-based software applications have the added benefit of providing the ability and store procedures in a convenient location. This streamlines the audit process and ensures that procedures are accessible to team members during operations.

Process Control Documentation

2/20/2018

Recording process information in oilfield operations can be extremely difficult. Furthermore, documenting everything on paper and storing it in files has become unworkable and unnecessary. While these tasks were traditionally done on paper, the scale and complexity of operations today make it almost impossible. Instead, firms are moving to automate process control documentation. This shift helps to reduces cost, increase efficiency, and improves organization and retrieval.

Documenting customer and regulatory mandated process information is one of the more tedious components of oilfield operations. Managers want to focus on increasing efficiency and productivity. They want to produce more volume for the same amount of labor and energy input. In contrast, process control documentation is mostly focused on recording past actions and complying with regulation. For that reason, automating the documentation process continues to grow in popularity.

A main benefit of an automated software system is the ability to record process information as it occurs. Software will allow users to record the inputs, the timing of each chemical additive, the drilling schedule, the pumping schedule, heating, cooling, water injection and many more processes.

Managers and compliance professionals can examine these results in the event of an incident or other non-conformity. Records and related information is saved in the cloud automatically, so there is no need to worry about papers or hardware being destroyed or misplaced.  Instead, the data is safely stored in redundant server locations.
