WHAT ARE API SPEC 6A, 6D & 6DSS

API 6A, 6D, and 6DSS are American Petroleum Institute standards that govern equipment at three different points in the oil and gas production and transmission chain,  but they share a common backbone of design verification, material traceability, welding qualification, testing, and documentation requirements.


API Spec 6A — Wellhead and Tree Equipment

API 6A governs the design, manufacture, testing, and documentation of wellhead and Christmas tree equipment: casing heads, tubing heads, spools, gate valves, chokes, and connectors installed at the top of the wellbore. Now in its 21st edition and aligned with ISO 10423, the standard uses Product Specification Levels (PSL 1–4) to scale quality and testing rigor to the equipment's criticality and expected field conditions.


API Spec 6D — Pipeline and Piping Valves

API 6D covers ball, gate, check, and plug valves used in pipeline transmission and distribution systems downstream of the wellhead, across pressure classes from Class 150 through Class 2500. It shares design and testing philosophy with 6A but applies to a different segment of the value chain and does not cover subsea service.


API Spec 6DSS — Subsea Pipeline Valves

API 6DSS (aligned with ISO 14723) governs ball, check, gate, plug, and axial on-off valves used specifically in subsea pipeline systems, up to Class 2500. Because subsea equipment must perform reliably in corrosive, high-consequence environments without easy access for repair, 6DSS layers on additional material, welding, coating, and factory acceptance testing requirements beyond standard 6D, including specifications for pressure compensation, spring-assisted closure, and ROV-actuated interfaces on qualifying designs.


Across all three standards, two themes drive audit outcomes: traceability (the ability to link raw material, heat lots, welding records, NDE results, and pressure test data to a specific finished, serialized component) and audit readiness (having that evidence organized and retrievable on demand, rather than assembled under deadline pressure). What is the difference between API 6A, 6D, and 6DSS?

API 6A governs wellhead and Christmas tree equipment at the top of the wellbore. API 6D governs pipeline and piping valves used in transmission and distribution systems downstream of the wellhead. API 6DSS governs valves used specifically in subsea pipeline systems and adds requirements beyond standard 6D to account for the corrosive, low-access subsea environment. Many manufacturers hold API Monogram licenses across more than one of these standards and must manage traceability and audit evidence for each.

Can one facility manufacture equipment under all three standards?

Yes. It's common for oilfield equipment manufacturers to run overlapping product lines often on shared shop floors using shared welding, machining, and testing processes. The challenge is keeping each product line's documentation requirements distinct and traceable, even when the physical manufacturing processes overlap.

What pressure classes are covered under API 6D and 6DSS?

Both standards cover Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 valves (6D also includes Class 400). Neither standard applies above Class 2500. 6DSS is not applicable to subsea valves exceeding Class 2500, and subsea-specific valves fall under 6DSS rather than 6D even at the same pressure class.

PSLs are tiered requirement levels (PSL 1 through PSL 4) that scale design verification, testing, and documentation rigor to the expected field application and consequence of failure. What is material traceability, and why is it the most common audit finding across all three standards?

Material traceability is the ability to link a specific piece of raw material — by heat lot or certified mill source — all the way through machining, welding, heat treatment, and testing to the finished, serialized component. Auditors consistently flag traceability gaps because paper travelers and spreadsheet logs are easy to lose, duplicate, or leave incomplete across a multi-step manufacturing process, especially when the same shop is running 6A, 6D, and 6DSS work simultaneously.

What is the API Monogram Program, and how does it apply across 6A, 6D, and 6DSS?

The API Monogram Program is a voluntary licensing program allowing manufacturers to mark qualifying equipment with the API Monogram, signaling conformance to the applicable specification.
