API Q2 Third Edition: What Service Companies Need to Know
The American Petroleum Institute has published the Third Edition of API Specification Q2, bringing an important update for organizations that provide well site services across the petroleum and natural gas industry. The new edition was published on September 10, 2026.
API Spec Q2 provides a quality management system framework for service organizations supporting well construction, intervention, production, and abandonment activities. The Third Edition places greater emphasis on clarifying where the standard applies and further distinguishes its relationship with API Spec Q1.
Key Changes in API Spec Q2 Third Edition
According to API, several notable changes are included in the new edition:
- Greater clarity around the scope and applicability of API Spec Q2
- Updated purchasing requirements with greater emphasis on a risk based approach
- Introduction of Performance Acceptable Criteria, or PAC
- Provisions addressing deferrals or concessions within preventive maintenance, inspection, and testing programs
- An expanded 10 year record retention requirement
For organizations currently certified to API Spec Q2, or preparing for certification, these changes may require a closer review of existing quality management processes, documented information, purchasing controls, maintenance programs, and record retention practices.

Because the Third Edition has only recently been published, implementation details and industry guidance are still developing.
