  • Drilling
  • Field Production
  • Well Closure
  • Repair and Maintenance

Many influential organizations are pushing for the energy industry to adapt to ideas centered in environmental and cultural sustainability. In 2017 the United Nations Development Program, the International Finance Corporation and IPIECA published a report detailing private-sector Oil & Gas sustainable development goals, and expressing how these should be integrated into standard operations.
Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expressed concerns that women make up only one-fifth of all U.S. oil and gas extraction jobs, while otherwise occupying 47 percent of the labor force. Encouraging more female representation in Oil & Gas represents a one avenue of meeting the cultural sustainability standards being encouraged by industry leaders.

Whether dealing with cultural or environmental sustainability, a management infrastructure that incorporates strong product, resource and employee management processes is key. Innovations that ensure that all employees have quick access to material safety data sheets, and effective response planning through handheld devices can be critical to reducing the effect of environmental hazards. Collecting and managing employee and customer feedback can help create inclusive hiring and employee retention polices, as well as internally address gender or ethnic based grievances or discrimination.

Simply implementing management policies that are mindful of sustainability imparities can create an internal culture of sustainability, which will inherently direct future planning in line with these development goals.

To aid with sustainability efforts, many progressive oil and energy organizations are turning to software to help manage their development and implementation efforts.  For example, tracking changes made to procedures and policies while attempting to implement sustainability practices is crucial when it comes to understanding the impact and effectiveness of such changes.

Clause 10 of the ISO 9001:2015 standard requires that we must be able to demonstrate our continual improvement efforts related to the quality management system.  But continual improvement seems a fairy arbitrary idea, and it can be difficult to understand exactly what that means.
Specifically, the standard requires us to document the actions taken to to enhance customer satisfaction, such as improvements to products and/or services.  This means that continual improvement must be a management mindset, centered around creating procedures and processes that grow into day-to-day practices that are carried to completion time and time again.

This process is dependent on effectively collecting customer and employee feedback and applying those evaluations to products and services. One of the best ways to do this is to utilize software-based management tools that track point of contact communications with customers and vendors and encourage and facilitate strong record keeping practices that centralize customer feedback.

Good response feedback should include open ended questions such as “Was the response successful?” or “What process should be improved?” Such data can be an invaluable asset when deciding what improvements can be made to any service or product. Beyond meeting the requirements, approaching the process in this way generates customer satisfaction and promotes long-term relationships.

API Spec Q2 certification ensures risk management, service quality, and compliance for oil and gas industry service supply companies.
API Spec Q2 is the first certification developed specifically to address industry and customer demands for service supply organizations in the oil and gas sector. While still relatively new compared to other API standards, it has rapidly become a critical requirement for service companies seeking to remain competitive.
With the release of the API Spec Q2 -2nd Edition, the standard has evolved to place even greater emphasis on risk-based thinking, service execution control, and continuous improvement across all operational processes.

The API Spec Q2-2nd Edition focuses heavily on risk assessment and management, contingency planning, management of change, service-related product control, supplier criticality, and the development of robust service quality plans. These elements are designed to ensure that service providers consistently deliver reliable, safe, and high-quality services in demanding oilfield environments. The updated edition further strengthens requirements around performance monitoring, competency, and operational execution, helping organizations proactively identify and mitigate risks before they impact service delivery.

At its core, API Spec Q2 aims to reduce nonconformities during service execution while enhancing overall operational integrity. Accupoint provides a flexible and scalable API Spec Q2  software solution that enables oilfield service suppliers to efficiently comply with the enhanced requirements of the 2nd Edition. The oil industry is going through a rough patch right now. It may seem dire with wells going offline and new exploration being reduced, but this is not the first time this has happened and it won't be the last.
During times like these, companies find themselves looking for ways to maintain productivity and revenue while limiting exposure to the markets and unnecessary costs. Operational excellence lies at the heart of these efforts.

If your organization is reeling from the market shifts and looking for ways to survive, then now is the perfect time to re-examine your operational expenditures, project management, and other critical processes.

It can be hard for companies to step back from the current situation and see the big picture, but gaining a high-level view of the company, markets, and industry is essential to long-term success. Doing this now will help you spot opportunities for cost reduction and reinvestment while the market is down, and it will position you for growth into the future.

Remember, the ability to look at your current situation through the lenses of operations, compliance, and quality management is a strategic strength. It provides a perspective that balances data, business goals, and risk management. Organizations that use this approach will discover ways to do more with less and re-establish growth.

Companies that commit to improving their operations and/or maintaining their already high standards will see their fortunes improve much faster than firms that ignore issues during the downturn. Firms practicing operational excellence, or working towards it, will be more agile and responsive to market changes during this cycle and future ones.

Considering the recent drop in crude oil prices and how it affects business development and systems management globally, oil and gas industry experts propose that leaders view this as an opportunity to address talent and technology needs. In light of layoffs and stalled project advances, businesses are looking to do more with less
As the oil and gas industry is in the midst of evaluating and improving business practices in order to competitively deliver services and products, the underlying drive is to find ways to create faster and more efficient processes. Further, the pressure to deliver at an optimum level while maintaining cost effectiveness is greater than ever.

One of the growing trends of balancing reduced resources is integrating technology solutions, including cloud computing. Simply put, a business subscribes to an application and accesses it over the internet.
The oil industry is going to have to call in technology companies and academics to solve its digital problems.
There are many advantages to using cloud-based technology, especially when your talent pool has been downsized:
  • Increased operational knowledge retention
  • Improved communications with customers and partners
  • Improved process management to minimize operational issues
  • Increased savings in cost and time
  • Faster returns on your investment due to operational  efficiencies
Due to changes within the industry and the demand to remain competitive within a global market, many businesses are adopting technological solutions to fill the void of talent and the mandate to do more with less. In fact, many businesses discover better business practices as they learn to operate according to a leaner, more efficient model.

With the fluctuation of oil prices lately, it’s natural for organizations within the oil and gas industry to worry about the uncertain times.   As oil and gas producers examine questions about locking in demand and thriving during a period of oversupply, questions of efficiency improvements and business model adjustments are at the forefront.

A common mistake that companies make during difficult times, is to focus on cost-cutting measures. Typically, employees and the knowledge they possess is often the first casualty of any downturn. In order to succeed long term, an organization must protect the institutional knowledge that is critical for continued success and growth.

The oil and gas industry has demonstrated the ability to be inventive by integrating new technology to address this problem.  As an example, many organizations are using the current downtime to implement a knowledge management system to capture and archive important process and procedures information.  As the industry recovers, these systems will guarantee employee learning and productivity improvements from the field to the boardroom.

Simply stated, are you prepared to thrive in a business environment that is volatile and uncertain?
While there are real challenges within the industry, opportunities exist to adjust and prosper into the future.  For more information on how Accupoint can help you manage these uncertain times, contact us today.

New technology continues to overwhelm and amaze us as faster and smaller devices with specific software continue to make a major difference in how we live our lives and conduct our work.
New technology enhancing communication and data storage in the oil and gas industry.
This is especially true in the oil and gas industry. Just a couple of decades ago, questions and answers had to go through phone calls, faxes or face to face meetings. Information was compiled and stored on paper documents in a limited number of locations. But today, questions can be answered instantly through e-mails and texts and information can be stored in one place yet easily and instantly accessed by an entire workforce via electronic devices.
Unfortunately, access to new technology alone does not guarantee improved results. We've all heard stories of someone we know with a phone that doesn't understand how to do the simplest of tasks.   Or of the company that purchased new computer hardware and software but never utilized it because the employees were fearful and uncertain of how to use it.
Here are two helpful reminders when considering purchasing and installing new technology. First, the education and training of the workforce is just as important as the equipment itself. New technology touted to save your staff time and energy cannot work if the staff doesn't fully understand how to use it. Training and support are required. Be sure to factor into any purchase decision the ability for users to ask questions and then be willing to consistently evaluate if the software is working as it was intended.

The second consideration is a focus on mobile technology. The benefits of mobile computing are numerous and include: data capture in the field, ease of collaboration from multiple locations, and better decision making. This in turn improves efficiency, communication and profitability.  Many organizations understand these benefits, but are not fully embracing it in their day to day operations.
